Narrowing the Gap between Academy and Industry

Addressing industry-academia gap is a theme that I raised, when asked to be keynote speaker at the National Seminar on Information Systems and Technology (SNASTI) 2008 held STIKOMP Surabaya on October 22, 2008.
Since I do not have any success stories to overcome the gap with academia and industry plus a high level strategies using a variety of policy models that are full of theories, so I chose the title above. I just have a naive way, how lice kupret Deso nan la plus katrok pedurungan wong Semarang, who were increasingly eroded by the wheels of capitalism (halah:)) Interested ngikuti my naive way in addressing industry-academia gap? Follow along this article ...

Academy-industry gap is hereditary problems that are not so easily solved.
Developed countries with high-level research degree such as Japan and America, was still regarded as an important issue, which otherwise could be debated endlessly, never ending story:) Had a hot topic in various international journals, heated panasin published by Research Policy Elsevier Science, peeled completed by the Journal of Higher Education, and sung beautifully by the National Science Board (NSF) that make up the interesting paper entitled University-Industry Research Relationships in 1986.

Academy-industry gap actually born because it is the point of view, mindsets and characters that differ between the two.
On some sides might be able to put together, although on the other hand there are some characters that embedded and difficult to put together. The difference is my perspective rangkumkan below.

From the above table can be analyzed, the task orientation of the academics who teach knowledge rather than producing a product or service, carry side effects researchers and lecturers at the university is relatively more theoretical character.
Instead the industry is more practical and pragmatic towards how to sell a good product or service, because that's where the profit comes. The direction of education at the university is also more extensive, complete and comprehensive, though not deep. Academics working in the area of mental development, improvement of conceptual abilities, intelligence analysis and the basic technical skills of students. On the other hand, industry officials demanded more professional, proficient and highly in mastering a skill.

Functional position of researchers and lecturers are hierarchically determined by the credit (kum) of the paper also affects the character of researchers and lecturers to campus to play in the area of theoretical topics and the development of science.Comfortable if in-nggedabruskan on paper, so comment my researcher friends:) Njomplang once with industry conditions that have always thought of products and services, with a very tight time deadlines and stressful.
Additionally, researchers at the university have been very tired with the activities taught in class, so study for them is to be part time. HR Trends in IT forward arahya forming the specialists who have the verbal skills and writing (versatilist), plus the balance of capital advantages defato (creativity) and de jure (degree, certification), increase the weight of the burden of academics in educating its students.

I did not try to solve this problem, because maybe it is not possible.
I only propose four ways to address this industry-academia gap. Two ways of green and blue maybe we used to do, and has been raised by many researchers, although I give a little strategy that usually missed. Two of the orange and pink are the follow-up after the first two completed.

1.
IMPROVE CURRICULUM AND EDUCATIONAL PROCESS

Honestly, computing curriculum in Indonesia (versions APTIKOM) which refers to the IEEE Computing Curricula 2005 already in the correct position.
Although there is a process of adaptation which I think is a bit outrageous, particularly in the department and study program called Information Technology. Information Engineering is too forced to receive the three computing disciplines outlined by the IEEE, the Computer Science, Software Engineering and Information Technology. I've discussed in the article about choosing majors computing. Probably needs to be underlined that the Computer Science department to educate the scientist who speaks fluent computing concepts, majoring in Information Technology to educate the network and telecommunication engineers, while majoring in Software Engineering is a software engineer for the candidate. Sure is hard when everything is compressed into one department called Information Engineering, graduates eventually become unclear and unfocused what competence. Let's see a little about the image of computing disciplines by IEEE Computing Curricula 2005.

Some of my other thoughts related to the improvement of curriculum and educational process I rangkumkan below:
• None of the above five computing disciplines that allow or tolerate ketidakmahiran students in terms of programming.
Check back drawing comparisons mastery of the material in my previous article. Good CE, IS, CS, IT and SE require absolute mastery of programming languages, graphics always punched into the center of Software Methods and Technologies. Do not let the professors or researchers on campus to say that the coding and programming is not mandatory for one department or study program above, it hurt the IT curriculum in Indonesia:)

• Focus on one major programming language and use it for assignments in each course.
Reach level proficient in a new programming language switch to other programming languages. Do not make students dizzy from too many programming languages that we teach to them, until they finally do not understand none:)

• Involve students in a variety of real projects to train and bring into the world of science who studied industrial

• Where possible avoid exam-style multiple choice, point to develop projects or analysis report

• Educate students to have the verbal skills and writing:
1.
Require students to have blogs where they write activity, the report task (project) and a place to foster writing skills

2.
Report (project) must be presented in front of both team and individual classes, a means to foster verbal ability

2.
IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF RESEARCH

The first need is expressed, I find the problems and important issues were missed on the research of students and lecturers in our IT Indonesia.
I rangkumkan some below, and also I had peeled off in the article about the research.
• Many studies performed without problems based on good research

• Many studies have produced software products without the measurement of research (how far to solve the problem set in front)

• Research is too grandiose, but many research problems that can be lifted from around us

• Research students are often not well supervised and coordinated with, and not based on the core competence of lecturers (try therapy-based Research University?)

The concept of research-based university will complete me explain in another article, but at least the basic elements are as follows.
• Research Laboratory (LP) or Research Group (RG) is the smallest working unit in the university

• GM to focus on one main topic of study (specialization) is determined based on the core competence of faculty researchers, for example:
o Lab Software Engineering (Software Engineer)

o Multimedia Lab (Game Technology, Interactive Multimedia)

o Lab Network (Network Engineer)

• RG led by a lecturer and allow some professors who have joined the same theme

• Coaching and carried directly by faculty meeting a progress report pekanan

• RG is a "hangout / nginep / togethers" student year / last semester in the same research theme

• 6-12 months of each incoming student RG accordance with the desired research topics

• Research that has been a good student, opted to seminars or conferences both locally and internationally

Who benefits from the concept of university-based research?
1.
Student: No confusion and wild in determining the title of the study. Also has experience working on quality research

2.
Lecturer: Having a team (members of the RG) to work on research projects and even prepare the course material. Lecturers will also be boosted sheer number of scientific publications (from a student thesis guidance)

3.
University: Brand image is raised, if the results of his research would diopen on the internet, can boost ranking webometrics and is recognized as a university-based research

All benefit and I think it's time we go to a research-based university.
For universities who are still pleased with the branding for the number of students looking for quantity, let's get a little bit less. Let's point and allocate budget towards research-based university.

3.
BE A Technopreneur

I invite researchers in the world of universities and colleges to try to become technopreneur.
By becoming technopreneur, we will learn to analyze market needs, understand what the problems in making the product, knowing well how a business move. Ability and crystallization of sweat that we get from the shock Therapy technopreneur will be good when we do research. We will be well grounded research, follow how the market moves, and we are not aware of also going to drive us to take the student guidance research themes that are close to the industry. I think the trends and mindset like this will bring character and reduce the gap between university and industry.Remember that Jerry Yang, Larry Page and Sergey Brin also are a strong academic background:) Research Duo-Google, Brin and Page, the software agent alias robot crawler into respiratory company Google, Page Rank algorithm is also the result of a patented research on behalf of Stanford University.

4.
MARKETING YOURSELF

I invite the civitas academia to try to market the results of our research, which is preceded by a personal marketing and branding (marketing yourself).
Introduce, marketing and image branding to do this not only through scientific conference event, conference proceedings publications or scientific journals. But also through popular writing, through writing light by using human language is good and right, by relying on Internet media and blogs as primary tools. Communities and industries in Indonesia did not read the proceedings and scientific journals, let us as researchers ikhlash and succumb to parse our research in simple language easily understood by the public. In their understanding of society and industry, our research may easily they can absorb. And specific to the industry, who knows there are needs of the industry that turned out to match the results of our research.

A unique story, how I was doing research on motivation to develop a model for e-Learning community.
It turned out then I sell and implement behavior as a strategy for implementation of eLearning at the Merpati Airlines, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of the Interior and some Banks that ask me as a consultant and implementor of e-Learning in their company.

Lecturer beautiful chanting of 2.0, 2.0 Students and Researchers 2.0, I think the struggle will become an important pillar of the education sector and our research into the future:)
Stay in the struggle!
